Globalization rejected

Students of Concordia voted to condemned the Canadian government for its role in the FTAA negotiations. The final vote count was 983 to 471.
The question appeared on the CSU General Elections ballot as a referendum question. It asked the students of Concordia if they wanted to condemn the Canadian government for ignoring concerns from environmental groups, human
rights groups and other groups concerning the upcoming negotiations for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
The question went on to ask if students condemn the Canadian government for the repressive security measures planned to greet protesters.
The CSU is strongly opposed to the FTAA and has educated students about the issue for several months.
“The official position of the CSU is that we support organizations that condemn the FTAA,” said CSU Researcher Dave Bernans. “Rob Green can now go on TV and say he represents the students of Concordia [on the issue of globalization].”
For Bernans, this will be a meaningful statement because he expects the university and the CSU to attract a lot of media attention leading up to the Summit of the Americas.
David Conti from the Canadian Federation of Students said the endorsement of the CSU’s position will help the image of activists also opposed to the FTAA.
“This makes it clear that people are mobilizing,” Conti said. “It’s not simply
radicals getting their kicks, but a student union and a university.”
