Sorority sisters skating for a cause

Members of the Zeta Tau Omega sorority at Concordia will be hitting the ice this Saturday and they hope to make a lot of money in the process.

Profits from this weekend’s Skate-a-thon won’t be used to finance sorority parties though. This time the sisters are raising money for breast cancer research. All proceeds from the benefit event will go directly to the Breast Cancer Reasearch Foundation.

This is the eleventh annual Skate-a-thon held by the sorority and organizers are hoping it will be a big success. The event will be held at the Atrium indoor skating rink at 1000 de la Gauchetiere.

Tiffany Joseph, a member of Zeta Tau Omega, said holding the event on a Saturday puts them at a big advantage.

“There are a lot of students that go, but there’s always a loyal clientele (there) on Saturdays.”

Admission for the event is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for students (13-17), and $3.50 for kids. The sorority sisters will be on the ice from 11am – 11pm and will be keeping busy with more than just skating.

“We’re going to be face painting for kids, we’re gonna have a table set up for donations, and we’re going to raffle off prizes,”said Erika Rourke, one of the sorority sisters.

Prizes for their raffles have been donated from sponsors, and the Zeta Tau Omega sisters are hoping the added income from the raffles will help to boost their final total of funds raised for the day.

Zeta Tau Omega is one of two sororities at Concordia University. They are a part of the Inter-Fraternal Council that represents all fraternity and sorority groups at the university.

Members of the frats and sororities also raise funds for their own projects through the operation of the G-Lounge located on the 4th floor of the CC Building on Concordia’s Loyola Campus.

The Zeta Tau Omega sorority is open to anyone, and according to Rourke, it is a great way for people to come together and make new friendships.

“We organize parties, we have mixers with the other organizations, and we have activities within the sorority to (.) just kind of relax and hang out together. It’s really a lot of fun,”she said.

Those who would like to help the Zeta Tau Omega sorority sisters raise funds for breast cancer research should lace up their skates and head to the rink this weekend.

Rental skates are available for those who don’t have their own.
