Riots bookend the academic summer
Montreal’s first riot this summer – complete with burning cars – began after the Montreal Canadiens eliminated the Boston Bruins from the NHL playoffs at the end of April.
Police arrested over 20 rioters on charges ranging from armed assault on a police officer and mischief on a police vehicle, to breaking and entering.
In mid-August more burning cars marked the approaching end of summer. A riot erupted in Montreal North following the police shooting of 18-year-old Fredy Villanueva.
Police released photos of people caught on tape during the riot and enlisted the public’s help in finding the perpetrators. Police used when similar tactics following the hockey riot.
According to Montreal police, 35 people have been arrested in connection with the riots in Montreal North.
