Fall Be Kind

Animal Collective
Fall Be Kind EP
(Domino; 2009)
7.5/10

After a year of touring in support of their last album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and a brief breather spent recording, Animal Collective has released a supplemental EP of songs trimmed from Pavilion and some written after the phenomenal release.
“Graze” serves as an introduction. With rich swirling electronic effects complimenting tweaked offsetting vocals, the song comes off as a hazy exploration of a destination unknown. It rounds off with a cheery pan flute solo by the one and only “Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute.” The solo never sounds pretentious or tongue in cheek, somehow Animal Collective maintains a truly genuine feel.
Fall Be Kind also boasts the first licensed Grateful Dead sample. It’s featured in the standout song of the brief five-track EP, “What Would I Want? Sky.”
The latest Animal Collective EP is another full hearted delve into an experimental realm, a place that might be all too familiar to the band.

Trial Track: “What Would I Want? Sky”
