Moonface &- Dreamland EP: Marimba and Shit-Drums
(Jagjaguwar; 2010)

Spencer Krug is a creative juggernaut. In the past year, he released two albums, each coming from one of the many projects he’s a part of (Wolf Parade, Swan Lake, Sunset Rubdown). Now Krug has released a solo outing under the pseudonym Moonface that was inspired by his dream journal entries.
As the title so bluntly suggests the album is centred on the marimba — picture a large wooden xylophone from Africa — and the occasional drum track. It’s a bold, stripped-down concept. But Krug pushes it even further; the EP is one 20-minute song.
The marimba happens to be a beautiful instrument and Krug explores each of its elements and facets with his mallets. While it’s one continuous track, Krug bridges individual sections with lulls or instrumentals.
It’s certainly an interesting offering, but definitely wouldn’t cut it as a full-time act.
