City in Brief Water meter-gate Only days into his re-election campaign, Mayor Gerald Trembaly cancelled a scandal-ridden contract worth over $355 million - the biggest ever awarded in Montreal - on the advice of the city's auditor general. The contract for water metres was awarded to a private consortium in 2007, following a bidding process the auditor general deemed incomplete and irregular.

Editorial

Last week, McGill University announced that they will raise tuition in their MBA program from $3,400 to $29,500 (for Quebec residents). The program will now pay for itself and will no longer receive government funding. This increase is a test case. If it proves successful we can expect it to spread to other programs, not only McGill but also at other institutions, possibly including Concordia.

Bull Penned

The summer has officially expired. Baseball has traversed a series of tired clichés to reach this point. The "boys of summer" have survived the "dog days of August" to make it through the "September stretch." Yadda, yadda, yadda. The end of September means one thing: stats! I love stats.

Upcoming Events

Aside from being the obvious combination of the words "local" and "delicious," Localicious is a local sustainable food campaign organized by the World Wildlife Fund as part of a series of global initiatives encouraging people to reduce their individual footprint and conquer global warming.

Open for Business

University and government dignitaries gathered downtown last Tuesday morning to celebrate the official opening of Concordia's new building that will house the John Molson School of Business. The 15-storey building also includes two underground levels, and will eventually accommodate almost 8,000 students.

Letters to the Editor

re: Students want out of CFS (Sept. 22) As the President of the Canadian Federation of Students-Quebec, I have been made aware of petitions circulating at all four of the CFS-Quebec member associations - these petitions are designed to initiate the process of leaving the CFS at these schools.

A Guide to Ouch: What To Do When You’re Injured

A very wise teammate of mine recently picked my pouting chin up off the floor by stating some of the wisest words I had ever heard: there are only two different kinds of athletes; ones that are injured, and ones that are about to be injured. As a current hurtin' swampdog, nothing sucks more than being forced to sit out while your teammates carry on getting better, faster, stronger and you're on the physiotherapist's table getting your IT band released.

Quick Spins

Acres and Acres - All Nations (Killbeat Music; 2009) 4.5/10 This East Coast collaboration falls short of quality folk. Despite the requisite harmonica and a solid musical base, Kris Pope and Dave Scholten of Acres and Acres can't compete with Neil Young. The album contains stripped down songs, designed by Pope and Scholten to showcase the stories they want to tell.

Meet a candidate:

Susan Clarke, a candidate for the Loyola district city council seat, said she hasn't figured out how to go about engaging university students in Montreal's civic election taking place Nov. 1. Clarke, who is standing with Mayor Gérald Tremblay's Union Montreal party, is seeking public office for the first time.

Michael Moore is no Hero

SASKATOON (CUP) - As if 2009 wasn't already a rough year for capitalism, Michael Moore has set his sights on our venerated economic system. In his latest film, Capitalism: A Love Story, Moore uses the current financial fallout as the backdrop for his attack on the economic system that brought the world to its knees almost exactly one year ago, as well as the culture and politics that have allowed for greed to be the ruling currency of our age.

Exploring the Golden Isles

After two name changes, countless shows, and one appearance at Pop Montreal last year, Montreal's Golden Isles lie just on the horizon, waiting to be discovered. The self-described "golden brothers" that make up Golden Isles are Kyle Salhany, Richard Wenger, Jonny Knowles, Matthew Salaciak, Emmanuel Thibau, and Adam Feingold.
