Rez rent hike considered

Students who will return to Concordia residences in the fall may be facing a mild rent hike. A six per cent increase in rent is pending approval from the rector’s cabinet.
This increase would be used to off set a loan taken out last year. It was used to pay for new furniture in all dorm rooms, said Jeff Peters, director or residences.
The monthly cost of a single room would increase from $315.62 to $333.85, while a double room would increase from $275 to $286.65.
The renovation project, which cost about $350,000, involved the purchase of new beds, desks, desk hutches, desk pedestals, shelves, drawer dressers, wardrobes and curtains. Some of the items they replaced were more than 30 years old.
“There was graffiti dating from the 1960s and 1970s. It might be the first renovation since the building opened. Some pieces [of furniture] fell apart before we removed them from their rooms,” Peters said.
