Last Friday the Johnson State Badgers fell prey to the newly re-stocked and fresh talent of the Concordia Stingers in exhibition play.
“Pat, see the ball,” Stingers’ coach John Dore yelled from his courtside seat.
Thanks in part to Concordia captains/guards Philippe Langlois and Gavin
Musgrave, the Stingers were able to bring home an 81-64 victory against the Badgers.
The basketball team, which seemed to be in the midst of a struggle, losing seven out of twelve games got out of their funk.
Granted, this is only the beginning for the Stingers, and seeing that there is only one game left until the regular season tip off, the Stingers seem to be on a much less slippery court.
With every new school year, comes a roster of new talent, and that’s exactly what coach John Dore has had to deal with these past few weeks.
“Patience, patience, patience,” is Dore’s solution to dealing with all his
rookies. “Each player must have a chance to learn and develop. That’s what university is all about.”
These include newly acquired players such as guard Louis Vigneault who scored 11 points, as well as Langlois, who also had 11 have been solid.
Not to be forgotten, of course are the veterans of this team.
Third year exercise science student, Musgrave, had 14 points, along with fellow teammate, guard Jonathan Dresner, who had 13 were impressive.
The Badgers almost looked victorious, when towards the middle of the first half the Stingers where only leading by two points.
The Stingers then called a time out to plot a new strategy.
With the end of the first half near, the introduction of subs proved to be a
gross mistake.
The intensity that Concordia had in the first ten minutes was gone, and the Badgers knew it. But the first half ended before Johnson State could take advantage.
In the second-half, the Stingers were not only leading by twenty-two points, but they were crushing the Badgers defence by knocking three point shots down their throats.
Not only were they stealing the ball, they also managed to get their intensity back.
The Stingers will try to sustain and retain their new found intensity when they face the Laval Rouge et Or this Saturday at 3 pm.
