The Concordia men’s hockey team saw their four game unbeaten streak come to end on Friday afternoon as they lost to the York Yeomen in a 7-4 shootout at Ed Meagher Arena.

After racking up 15 goals in a two game road trip last weekend, the Stingers finally let their offensive determination get ahead of their defensive responsibilities.

It didn’t take long for the score-fest to begin as forward Chris Page got things started for Concordia on a short-handed marker just over five minutes into the game.

On the same power play, however, York tied the game when John Eminger took a pass and blasted a shot that beat goalie Philippe Ozga to make it 1-1.

The Yeomen had a chance to take the lead when Mathieu Lendick received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind on Rich Williams, who was shaken up, but stayed in the game.

York got their best chance to take the lead off a scramble in front of the Concordia net but were unable to capitalize as the home team successfully killed off the penalty.

After the hard-fought penalty kill, the Stingers seemed to lose their focus.

The defence’s inability to move the puck out of their zone resulted in a goal by York defenceman Sean Murphy, who took a pass from behind the net and put the puck past Ozga for a 2-1 lead.

Fortunately for Concordia, there would be enough time left for York to take an interference penalty.

That call led to a point shot from Stinger defenceman Philippe Parent that beat York netminder Derek Dolson, tying the game at two-all.

The second period would be a wild one that saw goals by Philippe Paris and Luc Messier in the first 10 minutes of play giving the Stingers what seemed to be a commanding 4-2 lead.

Unfortunately the second half of the period belonged to the Yeomen, who blitzed the Maroon and Gold with three goals in less than five minutes to grab a 5-4 lead.

What made the sudden explosion worse was that all three were even-strength goals that came after players were left alone at the point to unload uncontested shots.

Concordia’s best oppurtunity to get back in the game came on a breakaway by David Comeau near the end of the period while on a power play, but the puck was shot wide and hit the boards.

Although just about every offensive statistic favoured the Stingers in the third period, they fell short in the one that really counted.

Despite putting on a clinic, out shooting the Yeomen 29-10 and dominating the face-off circle, the Stingers were unable to rebound from a goal scored at 36 seconds into the period by Yeoman Kevin Edgar, which made it 6-4 for the visiting team.

The closest chance for a Concordia goal came after a low shot from Chris Page was mishandled by Dolson and nearly slipped between his skates.

Dolson was quick on his skates however, and fell on the puck before it could pass the red line.

From that point on, the Yeomen added another goal in spite of the pressure coming from the Concordia defensive unit.

“We had to play better defence today and we just didn’t do it,” coach Kevin Figsby said after the loss.

“I saw in their eyes when we started scoring last week that some guys were going to start thinking offensively only,” he added.

Defenceman Michael Devereux shared in the disappointment.

“It just didn’t seem like the guys had their legs today, we weren’t playing hard, we weren’t hitting and we weren’t back checking.”
