Guelph volleyball player dies in car accident over the holidays

MaKala King, a member of the University Guelph Gryphons women’s volleyball team, was killed in a car accident Dec. 23.

The 19-year-old had just completed her first semester at Guelph.

Teammate Heather Stewart was also seriously injured in the crash, but is in the stages of recovery.

The accident was caused by icy road conditions just north of Barrie.

Both were first year players for the team..

The Guelph Department of Athletics will hold a memorial service prior to the women’s volleyball team’s home game against Brock this Wednesday.

There will be no admission charge to the game, however, donations will be accepted for the Makala King Atheltic Fund in memory of King, and the St. Michael’s Hospital Head Trauma Unit on behalf of Stewart.
