Day two of the Theresa Humes Women’s Hockey Tournament at Concordia University was a successful one for the home team last Saturday, who snatched the game from the Middlebury Panthers by a score of 4-3.

Concordia led 2-0 after the first period. Set off by Genevieve Dupuis and captain Marie-Claude Allard each with a goal. However, off the power play, Concordia had their work cut out for them for the remainder of the game, as Middlebury stepped up their offence to tie the game going into the third period at 3-3.

Jen Yerigan notched the Panthers first goal, beating rookie goaltender Christian Gautier top shelf at 9:06. That was followed up five minutes later with another one from forward Emily Quizon on a breakaway.

Allard tried to rectify the situation when she caught linemate Dominique Rancour’s rebound at 17:16 of the period with another power play goal, but Middlebury tied the game up at 4-4 two minutes later when Kristin Reid fell in front of Gautier and managed to knock the puck in.

Gautier got to see some game action for one of the first times this season, and fed off of the energy of her teammates.

“The girls on the team really helped me a lot in the locker room after I let in those goals,” Gautier explained, referring to the Middlebury comeback in the second period. The rookie netminder held her ground by shutting out the opposition in the final frame to hang on for the victory.

Left-winger Emilie Larocque got the game-winning goal at 5:58 of the third off of a pass from linemate Myrian Boudreau.

“We knew they would be strong team going into this,” Larocque said of the opposition. “They would always bounce back and we let them bounce back. We just had to stay composed during the periods and show our team spirit.”

The team expressed confidence heading into Sunday’s championship match, being ready for anything that comes their way.

“The Quebec [Under-18] team seems to be very strong and if Cornell gets good goaltending, they will be a tough match,” said Stingers Head Coach Les Lawton. “We’re ready for anything.”
