ConU wins two medals at Nationals

The Concordia Stingers’ wrestling team scored big at the CIS wrestling National Championship that was held at Brock University last Friday and Saturday.

The trip to St. Catharines, Ont, proved to be extremely successful as the men’s and women’s team earned a silver and a gold medal respectively.

19-year-old rookie wrestler Tyler Marghetis finished off a great freshman season by placing second in the 76-kilogram division.

Marghetis, who was named All-Canadian, got off to a bad start by losing his first match.

He rebounded and won two consecutive preliminary matches, but lost 8-0 in the gold-medal match against University of Calgary’s David Kooperberg, earning himself a very respectable silver medal.

Dugrenier, a sport-administration graduate student, breezed through the preliminary by winning three consecutive matches by scores of 5-0, 11-0 and 15-5.

The All-Canadian Dugrenier, who competes in the 70-kg weight class, wrestled University of Saskatchewan’s Megan Buydens from by a score of 12-2.

Although the wrestling season may be over for most university wrestlers, Dugrenier is preparing for the Canadian Championships in May. She is looking forward to the top spot after placing second in that competition in 2002.

The Canadian winners will advance to the World Championships set to be presented in September.
