Concordia’s best receive honours

It was one of those rare occasions when those who can most commonly be seen getting all dirty and sweaty, whether it be on the court, rink, field, or mat, get decked out in their best suits and dresses.

It’s the event of the year for many athletes where they can finally get to mingle and commiserate with all their peers.

It’s the night when those fortunate enough, get to witness the spectacle of what is the Concordia Athletic Awards Banquet, which was held last Wednesday at Buffet Crystal in Ville St-Laurent.

Sure, that might be laying it on a little thick, but it was memorable evening nonetheless with several significant awards being handed out to well-deserving recipients.

Among the most significant honors that were presented were the Marvin Cooper Award to Chris Wilcox, the Rector’s Academic Awards were given to Lauren Houghton and Mehdi Mourali.

The Ron Lapointe Award went to Dan Lacasse (men’s basketball) for his efforts in athletics, academics and community involvement.

The Denise Beaudet award, which carries with it the same honors for female athletes was awarded to Sue Kaye (women’s hockey).

The coveted Male Athlete of the Year Award, also known as the Dr. Robert J. Brodrick Award, was given to men’s hockey player Chris Page.

The award for Female Athlete of the Year appeared to be a tough decision, as two athletes tied for the award.

Martine Dugrenier, a female wrestler who was named CIS All-Canadian and won a gold medal at the CIS Nationals, was the first recipient.

Double-athlete Marie-Claude Allard, who is graduating this year, was the second recipient.

Allard, who plays for both the women’s hockey and soccer teams, provided the most memorable statement of the ceremony in her acceptance speech. “Playing both hockey and soccer made me hate McGill twice as much!”

Below is a list of those players who were named the most valuable to their team.
