BOOK ON YOUTH–STUDENT INTEREST

We are Brampton residents, and are glad to let you know of the recent publication of our book GROWING PAINS in the United States which should be of interest to all students. One of the authors, John Ifejika, will be a freshman at York this September, as a Psychology major. He will also be playing football for York.. I am a York Ph.D, and a University of Toronto Theology Major (Youth Focus). Barbara is a Stanford graduate.

The impetus for the writing of GROWING PAINS is the current challenge the North American society presently faces regarding many youth problems, including especially the problem of violence and alienation. It focuses more intently on the possibilities of youth and what can be done to empower young people to achieve and succeed. It deals with many policy and structural issues which impact on the success of young people, including the skyrocketing tuition and other educational costs. GROWING PAINS canvasses a multicultural perspective while arguing the interests of the whole society, and the special place of young people in the North American setting. It also deals with policy issues relating to education of young people. We sincerely hope that it will contribute constructively in the search for solution to many of these problems, for which the authors seek your support to get its message out. The book comes on the heels of the 17th World Youth Day which brought some 800,000 youths to Toronto in late July, 2002.

One of the authors, Barbara, a Stanford University graduate, has been featured on more than two occassions by your newspaper, and by several media.

Sam Ifejika

CANADIAN BOOK/author ANNOUNCEMENT TO BOOKSELLERS & RETAILERS

Growing Pains: A How-to Manual for Parents and Young Adults
Sam Ifejika, Ph.D., Barbara Ifejika Carson, B.A. and John Ifejika

Growing Pains advances our understanding of the needs of our young people
beyond adult conceptions of how their world is, or should be. Young people
want to be happy. They are also searching for meaning and recognition. Key
parental goals include helping their offspring to succeed, to mitigate the
frustrations of living and to achieve happiness. With much wisdom and
practical intergenerational insight, the book closely examines the price
of failure in North America and the frustrations and alienations of young
people in our rapidly changing world, at the end of each chapter
suggesting coping strategies. It emphasizes that young people cannot achieve
happiness simply by engaging endlessly in “happy hours,” nor in channeling their
sumptuous energy into extreme behavior that destroys lives. Their
satisfaction in life comes when they resonate from within, recreating
themselves in some positive, innovative ways that bolster their
self-respect and relevance. The book shows young people how they can find their mission
in life.
