Heartbreaking. That’s pretty much the Stingers weekend in Ontario summed up in one word. After a 6-5 over-time loss to York on Saturday afternoon, the Stingers rolled into Guelph with high hopes. But the devastation grew Sunday, as the Stingers lost in overtime again by a final score of 5-4.
The game got off to a bad start, as the Stingers took to the ice without head coach Kevin Figsby. Guelph scored only 26 seconds into the first, when Pat Lepage lost sight of the puck. The Stingers turned around on the Gryphons, and were playing well, and managed to only take one two minute minor penalty that period. Lepage has returned from the injured list, and was putting on a show stopping Guelph pucks, and succeeded for the rest of the period, as it would stay at a score of 1-0 Guelph.
It wasn’t until 8:04 of the second period that the Stingers were able to get out of the one-goal hole. They were on the penalty kill as captain Joey D’Amico served two minutes for slashing, when a short handed rush gave defenseman Trevor Hawkins a great opportunity to walk in on the right side and fire it at the Guelph goaltender. Phil Lacasse was up front to shovel it into the net, and the game was tied at 1.
At 14:50, the Gryphons took the lead again, with a goal from Jesse Pyatt, but just 41 seconds later, after great passing play between captain D’Amico, and Fred Faucher, Hawkins let a heavy one-timer go from the point and eluded the Gryphon goalie, Ken Ritson.
In a game of back and forth, the Gryphons notched their third goal of the game only 41 seconds into the third period. A minute later Marc-Andr
