CanWest: Another threat to a free and diverse press in our country

Founded in 1974 by Izzy Asper, CanWest is one of the biggest media conglomerates in Canada.

CanWest owns more than a dozen television stations across the country. They even own television outlets in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2001 CanWest tried to run uniform editorials in every one of its papers, except the National Post. The attempt was short lived, due in part to journalists from the Montreal Gazette removing their bylines for two days.

CanWest has been accused of fighting against tighter media regulations. They are also a proponent of cross-media ownership.

Think the National Post and Global National News offer a range diverse views of the news? Think again. Izzy Asper made sure you view the news the way he wanted you to.

This just in, the Concordian has just been bought out by CanWest. A great and glorious company!

To make our new owners happy, be sure to read next week’s editorials “Why liberty of press is bad.” And “Diversity in newspaper ownership means letting the terrorists win.”
