By the Book

I have to admit that I am getting tired of these sports movies with over-the-top endings. Let me recount one I saw on New Year’s Day. A team from Boise, Idaho was taking on the Oklahoma University Sooners in the Triangular Dipping Chip Fiesta Bowl (once that company sponsors this column, I’ll use their name).

Anyway, the team from Boise was a huge underdog going into the game and somehow got out to a huge lead going into the fourth quarter. Then, the heavily-favoured Sooners started to come back, tying the game on a two-point conversion (on the third attempt due to penalties) and on the first play from scrimmage, the Boise quarterback throws an interception that was returned for a touchdown. So, Oklahoma had a seven point lead with just about a minute left. Boise then comes back. First a hook-and-lateral play on fourth down to tie the game and then, when going for the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime, pulled off the Statue of Liberty play to perfection. Oh, and to cap it all off, the guy who scored the game-winning conversion proposed to his girlfriend on national television, who just happens to be the head cheerleader.

Alright, I think you get my point. This wasn’t a movie, but it sure seemed like it. A week-and-a-half later, this game is still prominently on my mind. I have no doubt that it was the best football game I’ve ever seen as it happens, and I think it will stay that way for a long time. This game is right up there with the Stanford band game (which I didn’t see live), the Music City Miracle (which I did) and Super Bowl XXXVIII. Just unbelievable.

Money, money, money, money

Speaking of College Football, notice how every bowl game has a corporation in their title? My colleague Genevi
