Peace through Poetry

Professor Lady Rojas along with her students from course “SPAN 321, Identity and Independence in Spanish America: Literature from 1880 to the Present”, organized a recital open to all students on March 20 in commemoration of World Poetry Day.

The recital was held in Concordia’s Hall Building.

It began with an introduction given by professor Rojas and was followed by poems presented by students Odeta Rizea and Rodrigo Marholz and several other students in the course.

Poems from recognized Hispanic writers were read as a tribute to all those who through their verses and sonnets expressed their aspirations for change. Each poem was preceded by a small biography on the author and then followed by an explanation on what the poem expressed.

The recital not only served to honour all those inspiring poets but also as a reflection of words having the power to make a difference and overcome violence. The poems from authors such as Pablo Neruda, Ruben Dario, Delmira Agustini and Cesar Vallejo, among others, expressed the importance on current themes such as peace, life, love, liberty and female suppression.

The recital concluded with images showing pictures of war, poverty and starvation, and professor Rojas expressed that “we can all be actors in the development of a culture of peace in a world globalized by war.”
