Cutbacks at Concordia: TA funding next on the block?

For this year at least, student Concordia's teaching assistants (TAs) have been spared the worst of a round of mandatory summer budget cuts. But with further cuts expected in the near future, the TAs' financial futures may be on shaky ground. "We couldn't cut the TAs budgets this year, because we had already promised them the money when the cuts came around," said Donna Whittaker, assistant to the chair of the history department "We had to cut deep into the budget to make the reduction," she said.

Housing crunch hits students hard

Christina Xydous, the co-coordinatorfor Concordia's Off-Campus Housing Bank, makes no bones about the housing crisis facing over 300 Concordia students. "The term housing crisis should not be misunderstood as an actual lack of housing," she said. "What this really means is that there is a lack of affordable housing.

Protest in support of domestic workers

About 70 people were present last Friday afternoon on de Maisonneuve St. to protest an Internet auction that included, as item #639964, the services of Filipina domestic workers. Placed by Diva International, the ad was put unobtrusively among ads for shopping sprees, furniture, jewelry and other consumer goods.
