Stellar goalkeeping allowed the Stingers men’s soccer team to beat the favored Patriotes from the Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres(UQTR) by a score of 1-0 last Friday night.
First year goalie Kyle Prillo-Guaiani earned a clean sheet in his first career start for the Stingers, shutting down the Patriotes offense with several huge saves on the night.
“I was happy that the coach gave me the nod, I felt very confident out there tonight,” said the man playing between the pipes for the Stingers.
“The Concordia Stingers goalkeeper,” responded UQTR head coach Pierre Clermont when asked what the problem was with his offense on this night. He admitted that Prillo-Guaiani played “great” against his squad.
“The ball didn’t want to go in, the goalie played well,” said frustrated Patriotes attacker Guillaume Heroux as he walked off the pitch following the game.
With twenty-three minutes to go in the second half Heroux was sprung on a breakaway up the middle. He was able to get a quality shot off on the net but the Stingers keeper denied the threat by lunging to his side, knocking the ball out of the danger zone. With seven goals, Heroux was the leading scorer in the Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF) heading into this weekend’s play.
“He was huge for us tonight,” said captain Addesa in praise of his keeper. The great play by Kyle Prillo-Guaiani came at an ideal time for Addesa, as this was the captain’s last home game at Concordia Stadium. The superb play by Prillo-Guaiani gave the Stingers a fighting chance at victory.
With 10 minutes remaining in the game the Stingers offense was finally able to chip in by scoring the first and only goal of the game. During these final minutes, Concordia was pushing in the offensive zone and won a corner. Sandro Addesa’s kick from the corner ended up in an ideal position for the Stingers. Forward Kwabena Oduro found the ball in the scrum in front of the UQTR net and was able to shoot it past the keeper. All of the white shirt players on the pitch erupted in celebration following this late, dramatic goal.
Coupled with the amazing goaltending that the Stingers rookie keeper provided, this goal solidified the victory for the men from Concordia.
“A win like this is a great sign for the future of the team,” said Prillo-Guaiani after the game. The confidence that comes from wins like this one will help lay a strong foundation for the Concordia men’s soccer program for the years to come.”
