The restored statue of Norman Bethune located next to the downtown campus was unveiled Tuesday morning.
The statue stands tall, looking over a re-vamped Place Norman-Bethune.
This is the first step in an effort to clean up and redevelop the portion of De Maisonneuve Blvd between Peel and St. Mathieu streets. Once the reconstruction is complete, there will be more space for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as more trees and new benches.
According to the City of Montreal, the second phase of the face-lift, during which the south side of the square should be completed, will begin once the underground infrastructure is repaired and will be finished in 2009.
