Stingers bit by Gaiters

A pivotal football game took place on Saturday afternoon in chilly Lennoxville between the Bishop’s Gaiters and the Concordia Stingers, and although the Stingers exhibited offensive stride against Mount Allison last week, they exposed many of their weaknesses against the Gaiters.
Quarterback Liam Mahoney threw three interceptions and completed only 18 of his 45 passes as the Gaiters managed to keep their hopes of securing a playoff spot alive by beating the Stingers by a score of 33-25.
Slotback Cory Watson, who caught 11 passes totaling 202 yards, says his team should be unhappy with the way they played.
“We had a lot of chances to make some good plays, but we made a lot of mistakes. I think we performed well individually, but, as a team, I think we played horrible,” said Watson, who also scored one of the Stingers’ two touchdowns on Saturday.
The stands at Coulter Field were packed with Bishop’s fans as well as a few brave supporters of the Stingers, but they weren’t treated to the most entertaining football game of their lives.
Although both teams managed to put points on the board, the Stingers and Gaiters only scored a combined five touchdowns, most of which came during the game’s second half.
The Stingers managed to take a 6-0 lead during the first quarter with a team safety and field goal by kicker Rene Paredes. Bishop’s running back Jamall Lee had a 68-yard run for a touchdown just as the clock had run out, allowing the Gaiters to enter the second quarter with a one-point lead over Concordia.
The crowd of 1,487 went completely silent during the second quarter, as both teams failed to produce any offence worthy of a cheer. Paredes kicked a 37-yard field goal, but the Gaiters were up by three at the end of the first half.
The second half was much more productive offensively for both teams. The Gaiters managed to add to their small lead with a field goal by kicker Josh Maveety and a second touchdown by Jamall Lee. But Concordia answered back as running back Michael Donnelly ran four yards for a touchdown with only five minutes left in the third quarter.
Although Mahoney played a so-so game for the Stingers, he executed an incredible play during the fourth quarter by throwing a 63-yard touchdown pass to Cory Watson, allowing his team to tie the game. But with 9:34 left to play, Gaiter receiver Keith Godding managed to sling past a disorganized Concordia defence and scored the game’s final touchdown. Despite Concordia’s best efforts, Mahoney failed to find an open man and could not properly execute any of his assignments during the game’s final moments. With the loss, the Stingers are now tied for third place with the Carabins in the Quebec University standings.
Concordia will have to reduce penalties and turnovers as well as put more points on the board if they want to beat Sherbrooke, who missed their chance at tying for first in the standings with their loss Sunday against the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or.
Next week could see a three-way tie for second place if both the Stingers and Carabins win their respective games.
Concordia and Sherbrooke will square off at Concordia Stadium on Saturday for their final game of the regular season at 1:00 p.m.

Scenario 1: Concordia and Montreal win
If this happens, Concordia (5-3) finishes 2nd in the Quebec conference and Montreal (5-3) finishes 4th in a three-way tie among playoff teams. Playoffs would have Sherbrooke @
Concordia and Montreal @ Laval

Scenario 2: Concordia and Bishop’s win
Concordia (5-3) finishes 2nd and Bishop’s (4-4) would make the playoffs and finish 4th. Playoffs would have Sherbrooke @ Concordia and Bishop’s @ Laval.

Scenario 3: Sherbrooke and Montreal win
Sherbrooke (6-2) finishes 2nd and Montreal (5-3) would finish 3rd, dropping Concordia (4-4) to fourth. Playoffs would have Montreal @ Sherbrooke and Concordia @ Laval.

Scenario 4: Sherbrooke and Bishop’s win
Sherbrooke (6-2) finishes 2nd and Bishop’s (4-4) finishes in 4th, forcing Montreal (4-4) to miss the playoffs based on head-to-head record. Concordia (4-4) would finish 3rd. Playoffs would have Concordia @ Sherbrooke and Bishop’s @ Laval.

What this means:
Basically, even though Concordia is guaranteed a playoff spot no matter what happens, it would be a much easier road to the Vanier Cup if they started their playoff run at home as opposed to in Sherbrooke or Quebec City.
