New York Governor David Paterson was in Montreal on Monday to meet with Quebec Premier Jean Charest at the fourth Quebec-New York Economic Summit. During the closing remarks, Charest said this summit was of particular importance in light of today’s volatile economy. Delegates from the province and the state signed six agreements, all with the common goal of maximizing economic ties between the two jurisdictions.
“Borders should facilitate trade, not hinder it,” Charest said, calling for easier ways to cross the international border. “If we require that everybody has a passport, it creates a great obstacle,” he said. As an alternative, Quebec is working on an “enhanced driver’s license,” which will be modelled after ones already in use in New York.
Paterson said he hopes the relationship between his state and Quebec serve as a global model for cross-border partnerships.
