$5 million in donations, $69,000 for animals at Montreal SPCA

As the Montreal SPCA continues its legal battle against its former director, new documents have been released showing just how serious the scandal-plagued charity’s finances have become.
The Society is currently suing former director Pierre Barnoti, who was fired over the summer and who is allegedly still running the www.spca.com website, formerly owned by the Montreal SPCA, but now dedicated to the United States-based “SPCA International.”
Barnoti is counter-suing for $350,000 for wrongful dismissal.
Despite receiving donations of over $5.1 million in 2007, almost double what they raised in 2006, only $69,698 went to the SPCA. The rest was spent on the fundraising campaign. In 2006, the charity lost over $264,000 when they spent over $3 million on the fundraising campaign and only raised $2.8 million.
In 2007, the SPCA tripled its debt to almost $2.7 million and, for the second year in a row, faced a budget shortfall of over $1.5 million.
Calls to the Montreal SPCA were not returned by press time.
