The Concordia Stingers women’s hockey team knew that a victory in their final game before the winter break would give them a lot of positive energy heading to the second half. On Sunday afternoon visiting the Carleton Ravens they shut out the Ravens 2-0 with strong play in all areas of their game.
“We’ve been working a lot harder lately,” said forward Catherine Rancourt. “Our team attitude and effort is constant.”
The game didn’t start the way Concordia had hoped, getting two penalties called against them early on. With defender Alynn Doiron and forward Mary Jane O’Shea both in the box the Stingers worked hard at not letting Carleton getting any shots on netminder Audrey Doyon-Lessard. It didn’t matter though, as she stopped everything coming in her direction.
“Killing the five-on-three gave us life,” said coach Les Lawton. “It gave us strength.”
Late in the period, the Stingers rallied for two great chances, one by Kelly Feehan, the other by Donna Ringrose. Unfortunately they couldn’t capitalize, but they knew they’d have to keep the intensity up after the period’s first half.
The second began with some strong Concordia pressure, keeping it in the Ravens’ zone. Once they finally were able to get a shot, it was blueliner Catherine Desjardins who unloaded a blast from the point tipped in front by O’Shea to give the Stingers the 1-0 lead.
After the second, the Stingers were holding onto the 1-0 lead, and Doyon-Lessard had stopped all 17 shots she faced, including a number of big saves in close stonewalling the Ravens.
“We’re all working together, things are working well,” said sophomore Maggie MacNeil. “There’s not one line, or one player.”
Around the period’s 12-minute mark, Rancourt and Ringrose broke out on a two-on-two rush when Rancourt got a perfect pass and just shoveled it over the left pad of Ravens goaltender Valerie Charbonneau, giving them the insurance marker they’d been seeking.
“I didn’t even have to move,” said Rancourt. “Just moved my stick, it was a perfect pass.”
Following the goal, Raven coach Jean-Fran
