Villanueva inquiry in February

A public inquiry into the death of Fredy Villanueva will take place for three days in mid-February, the Montreal coroner’s office announced Thursday. Eighteen-year-old Villanueva was shot dead by police in Montreal-North in August 2008 when a confrontation between two officers and a group of teenagers became aggressive. A judge ruled the officer who shot Villanueva was acting in self-defence.

New, expensive snow removal contract

As long as the snow keeps falling, Montrealers will have to keep paying – and it could get expensive this year. Well over 100 centimetres of snow have fallen in Montreal so far this winter. Snow removal companies have drafted new residential contracts after enduring losses from last winter, when the city was buried under near-record snowfalls. Most companies have a fixed price for up to 225 or 250 cm. With every extra cm of snow, they will bill $90 per hour. All in all, the contracts have gone up between 10 and 15 per cent.

Accessible metros

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced plans to begin installing an elevator at the Henri-Bourassa station. This comes as part of the STM’s metro accessibility project.
