University deficit lower than expected, but predicted to rise

Concordia is facing a smaller budget deficit, according to university VP finance Larry English. In a report to the Board of Governors, Monday, English said the school is now estimating a budget deficit of $1.8 million for 2008 – 2009. The shortfall had originally been projected at $3.9 million. However the new figure does not take losses by the Concordia university foundation into account; the endowment fund recently suffered a loss of $20 million.
But the school could be facing an even bigger shortfall next year, according to English’s report. With provincial funding not expected to increase by more than two per cent, and salaries rising by more, English predicted Concordia will face a $6 million shortfall for 2009 – 2010.
Two sites are being considered for a Student Centre, according to university VP services Michael Di Grappa. One site would require a $5.75 per credit fee levy; the other would require a $4.72 fee levy. The fee levy would pay for upkeep to the building. This comes after the university and the CSU came to a draft agreement on the use of space in the proposed student centre, the majority of which would be run by the CSU.
