It’s been almost a month since Forever 21 set up shop at Complexe les Ailes, yet Montrealers still can’t get enough of the American retail chain famous for its trendy fashions at rock bottom prices.
Although people have stopped lining up outside the store’s doors before opening hours, cashier Rebbeca Claman said customers can still expect to wait at least 20 to 30 minutes for the cash and fitting rooms. However, she says this is a drastic improvement from the three to four hour lines clients had to endure during the first two weeks. According to Claman, the store is busiest on weekends, and in the afternoons- particularly around 4 p.m., when uniform-clad girls and adults leaving work arrive in hordes.
At a time when budget-consious shoppers are looking for great deals, Forever 21 is cheaper than H&M, Zara, Mango and Old Navy, and some would argue, just as nice. Formal dresses are in the $25 to $50 price range; jeans cost $14.50 to $33.80; tops: $10 to $15; jackets: $38 to $60; and accessories: $4.90 to $10.
“When customers come in and look at the products, they’re super excited,” said Claman. “They’re especially excited for the accessories because the prices are so low, yet [they] look expensive and well-made.”
Concordia University student Angela Kassem was one happy customer.
“I’m very satisfied. The prices are low and the quality is good,” said Kassem, 23.
Her first reaction when she walked in the store during opening week was, “Oh my God!”
“I was shocked because it was overly packed,” said Kassem.
She decided it was best to return later and avoid the lines. “The first time I bought something I waited 15 minutes in line, which is still pretty long for me,” she said with a laugh.
Pink walls, floral designs and bright lights decorate the two floors of the 17,000 square foot store. The marquee above the door says XXI, which refers to upgraded urban stores in the Forever 21 chain. Inside, customers can find evening wear on the first level, and casual everyday wear on the second. While the store carries mainly women’s fashions, Forever 21 accommodates its male client
