Them Crooked Vultures
Them Crooked Vultures
(DGC/Interscope; 2009)
7.5/10
After a summer of teasers, endless speculation, and preview performances, Dave Grohl of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin have released their supergroup’s self-titled debut.
At its core, this record is a tribute to the heavy sounds of classic rock, primarily channelling the prolific Zeppelin. However, echoes of both the Foos and QotSA can be heard throughout. Standout tracks include “New Fang,” and “Elephants,” showcasing thunderous riffs and a charged, furious energy.
Vocals seem to be secondary on certain tracks when the crashing beats of Grohl and sexy, strutting riffs worthy of Jimmy Page take over.
Pedigree, chemistry, and pure musicianship all contribute to a strong and sultry offering from this hard rocking trio.
