The Concordia women’s hockey team have been a busy bunch over the holiday break. While most other teams used the time to head home and get some rest, the Stingers participated in the 41st annual Theresa Humes hockey tournament after Christmas, before officially kicking off the second part of their season on Saturday against McGill.
Unfortunately, the Lady Bees are going through a rough patch with some bad puck luck. In the Theresa Humes tournament, the Stingers dropped an opening game 2-0 against York. They went on to lose against Toronto 5-2 and were handed by a final loss, 2-0, by Guelph. The team couldn’t get back on their feet for a heated showdown against cross-town rivals the McGill Martlets, losing 3-0 last Saturday in front of enthusiastic McGill fans.
The Lady Bees will be on the road again Friday, Jan. 15 but will return home Saturday, Jan. 16 to face Carleton at 2:30 p.m.
Concordia’s men’s hockey team were equally as busy over the holidays, heading overseas to Europe on their biannual hockey tour. Embarking on a tour of Scotland and Ireland in the 2007-2008 season, Germany was the destination this year. The team left on December 27 for the 10-day trip, playing four teams before returning back home last Thursday.
Facing off against the Rostock Piranhas, the Stingers were bit 6-5. They couldn’t regroup against the Halle Bulls the next day, losing a close 4-3 game. They finally got the jetlag out of their legs to down the Pferdeturm Towers 10-1, but fell 7-3 in their last game against the Tore Teufel Bad Nauheim.
The boys are back in town but not for long. They face off at the hostile McGill rink on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 8:00 p.m. before heading out to Ottawa on Friday. The Stingers open the second half of their season at home on Sunday, Jan. 17 vs Carleton at 3 p.m.
