Tunnel opening delayed again

The long-awaited tunnel that will connect Concordia’s downtown library and Hall buildings to the Guy-Concordia metro has been hit with further delays.
The tunnel was scheduled to open in December.
Director of major programs with Concordia’s Facilities Management Tony Vanvari, sad unexpected issues have caused the delays.
“There were additional rocks. You can never tell exactly what rocks are down there beforehand,” he said. “Also, there was additional work down there that other people had to do, like Bell Canada, the CSEM [Commision des services electriques de Montreal] and also the electrical company.”
Old pipes and foundations were other “surprises” Vanvari noted before saying the construction is now “moving along well.”
The delays will not come at an extra cost to Concordia, he said. The university is paying one-third of the total cost. The municipal government is paying the balance. Vanvari was not able to say how much the entire tunnel cost as of press time.
Vanvari said it was still too early to speculate on when the tunnel will open. Concordia is currently installing security cameras, alarms and emergency phones in the tunnel.
