Relive the summer with The Concordian’s latest playlist, handpicked by our staff.
Every year, the “song of the summer” debate is sparked by the numerous hits that soundtracked the year’s warmest months. The Concordian’s staff compiled its favourites from the summer season into a playlist, with select picks explained below.
“Juna” by Clairo – Hannah Bell, Photo Editor
While most people are having a BRAT summer, I’ve been having a Charm summer. Clairo has always been a top musician of mine, and this newest album is my favourite release from her.
“Lunar Eclipse” by The Vaccines – Saskia Wodarczack, Opinions Editor
“Lunar Eclipse” was one of my most listened to songs while I was in Europe during my river cruise on the Rhine. Very bittersweet, especially the ending, and it takes me back to my July vacation, which I absolutely adored.
“Shotput” by Still Woozy – Emily Pasquarelli, Video Editor
From late-night summer ice cream runs to road trips with friends and family, “Shot Put” by Still Woozy was my go-to song this summer. Every time it played, I couldn’t help but get up and dance. As an indie lover, this song strikes a perfect balance of being upbeat yet calming with its wholesome lyrics.
“Maine” by Noah Kahan – Matthew Piscina, Sports Editor
This song was one of my favourites this summer because of the connection I felt with the lyrics. Being a New Englander like Kahan, trips to York Beach in Maine with my family are some of the best memories I had as a kid.
“Vienna” by Billy Joel – Marieke Glorieux-Stryckman, Editor-in-chief
This song has been added to all my playlists as I come back to Montreal after a semester abroad in Vienna. I know I’m not alone in loving this song — the themes of taking the time to slow down and enjoy life are always a good reminder for me and for so many other ambitious, early-career young people.
“Nasty” by Tinashe – Stefano Rebuli, Music Editor
Tinashe’s “Nasty” was stuck in my head all summer long thanks to its irresistible chorus and wavy hip-hop beat. The “match my freak” line became an iconic phrase and the song even turned into a viral meme thanks to a dance video. All these things combined made the song fun and I kept returning to it.
“86Sentra” by NxWorries (Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge) – Jeremy Cox, News Editor
The new Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge collaborative album has been long anticipated—seven and a half years since their last as a duo. Not only was “86Sentra” a breath of fresh air to my ear drums as the second track on Why Lawd?, but it’s just about the grooviest track of 2024 and my pick for this playlist… given I can’t choose the whole album.
“Switchblade” by Lia Pappas-Kemps – Kailee Krentz, Copy Editor
This song is by a small Toronto artist that I’m a huge fan of! Her song “Jinx” was one of my top songs last year and she released this new song during the summer and it has been on repeat for me.
