Stingers women’s soccer and rugby claim victories in second week of Concordia sports action.
The Concordia Stingers women’s and men’s soccer, as well as women’s and men’s rugby all took to the field over the weekend — here are the results:
Soccer
Following a tough first week of action that saw the women’s and men’s teams take one out of a possible nine points in three games combined, redemption was up for grabs in week two of the RSEQ regular season.
The women’s squad was at Concordia Stadium for the third straight game to begin the season. On Sept. 6, the Stingers welcomed Université Laval Rouge et Or to town to try to close out the homestand on a high note.
The Stingers, however, found themselves in trouble just 20 minutes into the match.
Stingers goalkeeper, Rosalie Girouard, came out of her net to prevent a Rouge et Or scoring opportunity. As Laval’s striker eyed the ball, she tripped over the sprawling Girouard — who was handed an immediate red card and removal from the game. The foul meant the Stingers had to defend a free kick from about one metre outside the box.
After the initial shot attempt was blocked by the Concordia defenders, Laval capitalised on the rebound opportunity. It was 1-0 Laval, who now had the momentum in the match. A short nine minutes later, Laval struck again. A beautiful cross-field pass gave Laval a 2-0, which ultimately became the final score.
The Stingers women’s soccer team falls to two losses and one draw in three games to start the regular season. They will begin a three-game road trip on Sept. 13 at Université de Montréal, with kick-off set for 6 p.m.
As the Stingers men’s soccer team took to the pitch, they looked for their first win of 2024. They also faced the Rouge et Or on Sept. 6.
Early in the match, midfielder Olivier Roy took advantage of a loose ball in the Laval slot, firing it past the Rouge et Or goalkeeper, giving Concordia a 1-0 lead. The offence would not stop there.
In the 85th minute, midfielder Zeid Abushaar added a goal of his own, extending the Stingers’ lead with a critical insurance goal. To top it off, defender Amadou Alioune Diop finished a beautiful cross-field pass for the Stingers’ third goal, giving Concordia a 3-0 lead as time expired.
With the 3-0 win, the Stingers got a massive three points as they go on the same three-game road trip as the women’s team. They will face the Université de Montréal Carabins on Sept. 13. Their kick-off is set for 8:15 p.m.
Rugby
It was an eventful weekend of action for both Stingers women’s and men’s Rugby.
The men’s team was first to play, lining up against the McGill University Redbirds on Sept. 7. For the Stingers, it was their first regular season game of the season.
The Stingers finished the 2023-24 season with three wins and three losses. The team lost in the semi-finals to École de technologie supérieure (ETS) to conclude their season. Concordia looked to start the 2024-25 season on the right foot at McGill’s Percival-Molson Stadium.
It was a tough battle until the final buzzer, with the Stingers dropping their opening game of the season 30-10. Concordia will play next when they host the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees for their home opener on Sept. 15. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
The women’s team played in their most important game of the season this past weekend. The 20th annual Kelly-Anne Drummond Cup was played at Concordia Stadium against the McGill martlets on Sept. 8.
An emotional atmosphere transitioned to celebrative as the Stingers put on a decisive offensive performance. Nine tries from eight different Stingers players gave Concordia a 53-5 victory. To read more, check out our full article recapping this game.
