Men’s and women’s hockey won all five of its games this past week.

While some of us enjoyed some rest over reading week, the Stingers stayed busy. On the pitch this week, the season finales for the women’s soccer and men’s rugby teams took place, while the women’s rugby team competed in the university’s first playoff matchup of the season. Indoors, the Stingers men’s and women’s hockey teams took to the ice for the first regular season action.

Ed Meagher Arena was the site for the first games of the season for the men’s and women’s hockey teams.

The men’s team kicked off the action with three games in five days on home ice, playing Carleton University, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, and Toronto Metropolitan University. In the three games combined, the Stingers outscored their opponents 19-4 and defeated each of them. Concordia is now in first place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) east division standings with a 5-0-1 record.

They will next play this Wednesday when they host their rival, the McGill University Redbirds.

The women’s team is off to a sizzling start as well. A day after a 3-1 victory over the McGill University Martlets on Oct. 19, the Stingers returned to Concordia from their home opener. The game began with a banner unveiling to celebrate their 2023-24 USports national championship. Once the puck dropped, the Stingers skated to a 3-0 victory, again over McGill.

They will host the Bishop’s University Gaiters on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

Soccer

A roller coaster of a season for the men’s soccer team continued this week. The Stingers had already solidified their spot in the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) playoffs, but two wins would clinch a home-field matchup in the opening round.

As Concordia hosted McGill University on Oct. 18, they could not find the back of the net. The Stingers dropped their first of two matches by a score of 1-0. On Oct. 20, Concordia beat the home team, Université du Québec à Montréal Citadins, to head into the playoffs with momentum.

They will face the first-place Université de Montréal Carabins on Oct. 25 at 8:15 p.m.

The Stingers women’s soccer team’s season is officially over. The team dropped both of its matchups this past weekend, by a score of 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. Concordia ends their season with two wins, two ties, and ten losses.

Football

The Stingers football team is nearing its playoff matchup. The question is — who will they face?

The team hosted the first-place Université de Montréal Carabins on Oct. 19. In a lopsided game, Concordia lost by a score of 33-3. This means that when the Stingers face the McGill Redbirds on Oct. 25, the winner will clinch third place and face the second-place team in the opening round of the playoffs. Both Concordia and McGill are tied in the standings with two wins and five losses.

Rugby

For the women’s rugby team, the playoffs began on Oct. 12. The Stingers finished the regular season with four wins and two losses. Despite a hard-fought battle, the Stingers dropped their first-round playoff matchup by a score of 17-7.

The men’s team also saw their season wrap up this past weekend. The Stingers faced the Carabins on Oct. 12 and Gaiters on Oct. 20 needing to win both to have a chance at qualifying for the playoffs. Ultimately, Concordia dropped both of its matchups and finished its season with one win and five losses.
