The Stingers football team was eliminated from the RSEQ playoffs while both hockey teams have soared their way to the top of their respective standings.
The Stingers had a small schedule compared to past weeks, but that does not mean that there was less at stake. The football team played in the opening round of the RSEQ playoffs. On the ice, the women’s hockey team had their sights on staying perfect this regular season while the men’s team tried to extend a seven-game winning streak.
Here is what happened this week:
Football
The Concordia Stingers football team returned to action on Nov. 2 for the first time since their 29-19 loss to the McGill University Redbirds. The team clinched the fourth seed in the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) football standings, meaning they had a date with the first-place Université Laval Rouge et Or.
The Stingers lost both of their regular season matchups against the Rouge et Or, 36-11 and 34-10 respectively. Concordia hoped to flip the script and pull off an upset in the playoff semi-finals.
In a close first quarter, the Stingers saw themselves down by only four points. At halftime, the score was 20-5 in favour of Laval, but still within reach for Concordia. It was the third quarter where the game got away from the Stingers.
Another three touchdowns for the Rouge et Or in the second half was too steep of a hill for the Stingers to climb, where they ultimately surrendered the RSEQ semi-finals by a score 41-18.
The Stingers finish their season winning two and losing seven in the regular season and playoffs combined.
Hockey
Over at Ed Meagher Arena, the high-flying Stingers hockey teams continued to shine.
The men’s hockey team kicked off the week of action with a game visiting the Carleton University Ravens on Oct. 31. In a back-and-forth affair, the Stingers prevailed in overtime by a score of 3-2 via a goal from forward Mikael Huchette. They carried an 8-0-1 record into their next game against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.
As the puck dropped on Nov. 2, the Stingers brought the same momentum they have been riding all season. The Stingers fought hard and held on for a 4-3 victory. They will bring their Ontario University Athletics (OUA) best 9-0-1 record into their next game on Nov. 8, where they will visit the McGill University Redbirds.
The Stingers women’s hockey team, still ranked first in all of Canada amongst USports hockey teams, brought a 3-0-0 record into their game against the Université de Montréal Carabins on Nov. 1.
In another decisive, disciplined effort, the Stingers shut out the Carabins by a score of 4-0. Concordia will look to continue its winning ways when they visit the McGill University Redbirds on Nov. 10.
