A cosy night to chat over drinks and yarn.
A community of knitters and crocheters hooked up to Stitch & Sip at Reggie’s Bar for a night filled with yarn, music, and drinks. The Fine Arts Student Alliance (FASA) and MODE Collective, Concordia’s fine arts fashion club, hosted the event on Nov. 27.
Some attendees came equipped with their own tools and unfinished projects, while others tried out crocheting for the first time.
The MODE team handed out several kits with crochet hooks, yarn, and a beginner guide for making a cat ear beanie. They also collaborated with Reggie’s to serve a special drink menu, with names like “Yarn Shower” and “Hooker” referencing the crafts of knitting and crocheting.
Reggie’s was transformed into a laid-back space, with long tables and floor cushions that encouraged attendees to mingle while working on their projects.
The event was the first edition of MODE’s Stitch & Sip.
“We just wanted to do something where people could come and chill for the end of the term,” said Maria Saldaña, MODE’s social media coordinator. “It’s so nice to see that there’s a community in Concordia that’s interested in just meeting like-minded people, and doing clothes and stuff for yourself, and being friendly.”
Many found the chance to pick up their hobby again or learn a new one after a tough fall semester. Those seasoned with crochet skills guided beginners with their first attempts at the craft.
“I’ve been meaning to learn, but I just didn’t have the materials, so this is kind of the perfect environment to learn,” said Camila Ariza, a film production student and first-time crocheter.
Ariza found the activity to be a meditative experience requiring her full attention, especially as a beginner. The event gave her a breather from the finals season.
“I can just chill, chat, and crochet,” said Ariza.
