Delta Jacobs started playing guitar as a teenager and began taking songwriting seriously in 2021. Now, the first-year studio arts major at Concordia is working on her first musical project under the name She Takes After.

The alias comes from the English translation of her Mohawk name, Ioié:ron, pronounced yo-YAIR-roon.

Music was a big part of her life growing up. Her family listened to artists like The Cure and Duran Duran, and her grandfather produced his own music.

Her 2025 single “Viceroy” is her first release. The song paints the picture of a relationship that feels like smoking a cigarette.

“It’s fun at the beginning — you ignite it and you light it up, and it’s great, but towards the end, it just kind of burns out and fizzles,” said Jacobs.

This song is the first of many. Her next project, which is set to release in mid-February, will be self-titled and feature at least 12 songs.

Ruby Nikols is Jacobs’s friend, collaborator, and producer of “Fallen Angel,” one of the songs from Jacobs’s upcoming project.

The lyrics of Jacobs’s songs stand out to Nikols. She said that Jacobs is very in tune with her emotions.

“I also love the tone of her voice over a warm bass and a crunchy guitar,” said Nikols. “It’s something that she does on her track “Viceroy,” and I think it carries the essence of her lyrics into her production.”

Nikols has heard a lot of Jacobs’s music in its early stages.

“I would describe her music as soft, lo-fi, maybe a little grungy, bedroom pop,” said Nikols.

Jacobs performed an acoustic set on Jan. 30 at the Kor Art Centre, where she works in Kahnawake.

“I always wanted to perform and inspire people,” she said.

Aside from yearly piano recitals from her youth, Jacobs has little experience performing. She shared feeling nervous about playing her original music for the first time.

Jacobs takes musical inspiration from artists like Kali Uchis and Billie Eilish. She noted the simplicity of the production of “At Seventeen” by Janis Ian as a major inspiration.

She added that her partner and friends also inspire her, with multiple songs dedicated to the people around her for her newest project.

When it comes to her process, Jacobs has evolved since she began in 2021.

“I would journal or write little poems, and then I would put music to that,” she said. “But lately, it’s been more like, I’m just kind of messing around with the chords.”

She mentioned a song she is in the process of writing about retroactive jealousy. She wants it to sound like a ‘50s doo-wop piece and has been searching for chords that align with that.

“I don’t know if that’s cheating in songwriting,” she said, laughing.

Jacobs is excited about upcoming visual projects. She is a multimedia artist and explores a variety of genres.

“Delta [Jacobs] could work in any style, and it would be authentic,” said Nikols. “She pulls off everything. I think it’s because she draws inspiration from everything — she’s very in touch with her community and with pop culture. She’s versatile; her only constant is her eyeliner.”
