POP Montreal Festival preview: Explore the unknown

Fortunately, just as that wretched, summer’s-end sickness trickles over campus, Montreal’s fastest growing festival has come to lift our hearts. POP Montreal is perfectly timed to remind us of our vibrant culture, top-notch venues and seemingly endless repertoire of diverse musical talent, before Jack Frost creeps in to dampen our spirits . . . or lawn chairs.

Yes, there will be names, big and small. David Byrne & St. Vincent, Born Ruffians, Gotye and our own Grimes, Stars and Cadence Weapon to name a few. But you’ve gotta’ dip your toes in unfamiliar waters to fully grasp what POP is all about. Over 400 artists will be settling in our city from Sept. 19-23. Mix Tape: I’ll never grow up

Last week, we tried to prolong summer with 20 tracks that celebrated the fun and relaxation of the season – all the while ignoring the onslaught of schoolwork on the horizon. I’m sad to report, however, that despite all of our efforts, the dreaded first day of classes has come. So for this week, we’re going to change tacks and welcome the semester by distilling the essence of Montreal’s back-to-school atmosphere: feeling young.

Each side brings a different approach to youth, in order to reflect Concordia’s sizable groups of new and mature students. Side A represents youth from the perspective of those in the thick of it, with artists as young as 19 and no older than 23 at time of recording. Side B is more reflective, with tracks by artists in their late 20’s and 30’s looking back on what it is to be young. Enjoy it while you can!

Side A: Young hearts

1. “Fate” – Young Man – Vol.1

2. “Barely Legal” – The Strokes – Is This It

3. “(She’s) Sexy + 17” – Stray Cats – Rant N’ Rave with the Stray Cats

4. “Sex Beat” – The Gun Club – Fire of Love

5. “Bastards of Young” – The Replacements –Tim

6. “Thirteen” – Big Star – #1 Record

7. “Cello Song” – Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left

8. “The Way Young Lovers Do” – Van Morrison – Astral Weeks

9. “HiiiPower” – Kendrick Lamar – Section 80

10. “Oliver James” – Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

Side B: Young at heart

11. “Teen Age Riot” – Sonic Youth – Daydream Nation

12. “Doused” – DIIV – Oshin

13. “A New England” – Billy Bragg – Life’s A Riot with Spy vs Spy

14. “All My Friends” – LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver

15. “Pink Bullets” – The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow

16. “Summer Skin” – Death Cab for Cutie – Plans

17. “Always” – Blink-182 – Blink-182

18. “Die Like A Rockstar” – Danny Brown – XXX

Mixtape: Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day.

The holiday named for Saint Valentine, the patron saint of overpriced lingerie.
It is a day couples revel in. A chance to atone for 364 days of sexless bickering. Fellas, time to purchase a $17.99 box of mass-produced chocolates at the pharmacy, and whichever three-pack of condoms offers the best comfort-to-price ratio. Ladies, appreciate the B-effort your lad is giving and wear that sexy nurse outfit your friend bought you as a joke four years ago and enjoy Side A.
Single people, I know this day hasn’t been too kind to you ever since that boy/girl you liked in third grade didn’t put a card in that wondrously decorated paper bag on your desk, but don’t let that get you down! Think of all the discount chocolate you can eat tomorrow! Until then, enjoy listening to Side B while eating a microwavable burrito alone in the bathtub.

Side A – Tied down

1. “Sunshine” – Lupe Fiasco – Food and Liquor
2. “Girlfriend” – Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

6. “Feel Good Inc.” – Gorillaz – Demon Days
7. “Stadium Love” – Metric – Fantasies
8. “Angel” – Shaggy – Hot Shot
9. “Downtime” – The Gandharvas – Sold for a Smile

Mixtape: Gettin’ Jolly With It

Ah, the holidays. So it turns out there are – and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise – two kinds of people in the world: those who enjoy Christmas music and those who don’t. The latter will find themselves with hefty dentist bills for grinding their teeth whenever they enter any commercial establishment in the month of December, while the former don’t need to down a bottle of wine to belt out about what Santa does when you’re sleeping.

Side A is meant to make Christmas bearable for those who’d run over Rudolph (and not call the SPCA) any day of the week, but who just can’t resist the call of Freddie or Zooey. Side B is for, frankly, everyone, including the grumpiest little Grinches.

Mixtape

I only have 150 words to write what this week’s mixtape is all about. There are three or four words I could use that would perfectly explain the whole thing, but unfortunately they are part of a lost language etched into pillars that lie in the Indian Ocean, leaving me only with English to inadequately describe the theme behind this mix. It is intended to capture the feel of a long night of cigarettes and wine and taxis, the capitulation of the day to the fever dream of drinks, dances and moonlight. From the ecstatic opening of “You” to the delirious climax of “OCAD Flu,” the first half is all about the rise of midnight empires, while the second is intended to embody the slow descent of last night into tomorrow during the pre-dawn hours when the serotonin is exhausted, ending with the dreamy embrace of Heathered Pearls and M83.

Time Is On Our Side

Twenty-seven issues and 26 weeks, and we’re at the end of another school year. I’d wax-poetic about the past year and all its up and downs, but mostly I just feel like tuning out from school with a pair of headphones around my skull. Here’s our eclectic list of top, time-themed songs, when it seems like all you need is a few more hours to finish that essay or project, or wrap up your studying. (We’ve spared you all the cloying pop classics like “TiK ToK” and “Time Goes By So Slowly”). Peace out, ConU.

Purple Haze

In the druggie universe, there are two types of people: those who like to move and those who like to talk. The first may or may not wear tight fitting neon outfits covered in glitter, and are most comfortable in strobe light-infused spaces. On the other hand, the latter prefers the safety of an old couch, perhaps framed by a poster of neon swirls, in a circle of like-minded friends who enjoy discussing the importance of this moment RIGHT NOW.

Although I am obviously being facetious, it is undeniable that there is a difference between the enthusiasts of uppers vs. downers. So no matter what you like to do on your Friday night, this mixtape has got you covered. Start with Side A to find the meaning of life, then flip to Side B to get the party started.

Covers

I have two simple rules when it comes to covers: it must be different or it must be better. Why redo a classic if only to hear it done by you? They have a word for that, and it’s “narcissistic.” These musicians know better, and have provided some pretty unique takes on others’ songs.
