Montrealers joined millions of people around the globe when they turned off all “non-essential” lights during Earth Hour 2009. Homes and businesses around the city dimmed their lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, as part of a campaign aimed at raising awareness about climate change. The cross that sits atop Mount Royal was turned off, as were the floodlights that usually shine on Montreal City Hall, in support of the World Wildlife Fund-sponsored event.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007. This year’s edition was supported by nearly 4,000 cities in over 88 countries, and across 25 time zones. Global landmarks like the Great Pyramids, the Sydney Opera House and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro were all cast in shadows.
