An “anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist call to disrupt George W. Bush’s visit to Montreal” took over a downtown block Thursday. The demonstration drew about 300 protesters, five of whom were arrested. Countless shoes were thrown, two American flags were lit on fire, and an effigy of the former president was burned. Protesters effectively shut down Rene-Levesque between University and Peel Streets, as police barricaded the entrance to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel while Bush was inside addressing the city’s chamber of commerce.
