Cosmic Egg

Wolfmother
Cosmic Egg
(Interscope Records; 2009)
7/10

After an extended break and a complete change in line-up, Australia’s Wolfmother returns with Cosmic Egg, the highly anticipated sequel to their self-titled, 2005 debut.
From the opening track “California Queen,” and first single “New Moon Rising,” it’s clear Wolfmother is still in the same vein of later 60s heavy rock giants, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. While these comparisons are easy to make, Cosmic Egg also has a tinge of 90s stoner rock.
The energy on Cosmic Egg is maintained, from beginning to end, with soaring vocals and sonic guitar riffs, briefly slowing down in the middle with “Far Away.”
The album closes with “Violence of the Sun,” a blend of rock and R&B that steps outside of the typical Wolfmother sound.

Trial Track: “In the Morning”
