The Concordia men’s basketball team had their lowest offensive output of the season as they dropped their third straight game in a 86-53 loss against the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday.
After sticking close for the first ten minutes the Stingers eventually collapsed under the pressure of a smothering defence and potent offence that had eleven 3-pointers over the course of the game.
Making an already difficult situation seem impossible was the absence of Stinger captain Philippe Langlois who suffered a concussion last week in a game against McGill.
While things were close near the midway mark of the opening half with the score 16-14, Laval quickly exploded with an 8-0 run that put the Stingers way back in their rear view mirror.
Despite the meltdown, the Stingers were able to prevent Laval from further extending their lead but were not able to gain any momentum in the other direction either.
Every time Concordia attempted to make a run, let alone a basket, Laval was more than equal to the challenge.
Twice, Stinger co-captain Gavin Musgrave hit three pointers to try and help his team claw back, but both times Laval responded with a three of their own.
Laval also showed off their impressive transition game and play-making abilities as they took a 40-30 lead into half time.
“We knew we were in tough from the get go,” Musgrave, who led the team with 15 points, said.. “They’re a tough team to begin with so things weren’t in our favour.”
It was a rough start for the Stingers in the second half, as it took nearly six minutes before they would get their first basket on a three pointer by guard Ratsko Popovic.
Laval guard Charles Fortier responded on the following play with a three of his own to make the score 51-34 at the time.
Things did not get better as Laval continued to make the most of Concordia’s turnovers and refused to let up even when leading by almost 30 points.
There were times when Laval would not even let the Stingers bring the ball out of their zone, which nearly caused several turnovers.
Laval reached their biggest lead of the game with the score at 86-49 in the last couple of minutes in game that was long over before the final buzzer sounded.
Despite the lopsided score, Head Coach John Dore explained that were still a lot of things to take out of the game.
“There were a lot of positives in the first half,” Dore said. “It’s a good measuring stick for us, and we know we’ve got our work cut out for us.”
The Stingers are now off until January, when they will compete in the Rod Shoveler Tournament to open the second half of the year.
