With new U.S. – Canada border regulations, many citizens who rushed to apply for their Canadian passports feared losing their Canadian citizenship. One of the reasons for panic was the discovery of a troublesome old clause in the Canadian Citizenship Act that could strip residents who thought they were citizens of their right to a Canadian passport.
A clause dating from 1947 in the Canadian Citizenship Act leaves 450 Canadians, according to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Diane Finley, with the risk of becoming stateless people.
