Quebec’s Minister of Transport has granted the City of Montreal its wish. Beginning in spring 2009, the default speed limit on the island of Montreal will drop from 50 to 40 km/h.
Although the city has been asking for this island-wide speed limit cut since April, most
of the island’s main arteries, like the René-Lévesque and de Maisonneuve boulevards, won’t be subject to the new limit.
Elsewhere, speed limits might drop even lower, to 30 km/h, near schools and parks.
André Lavallée, a city executive in charge of public transport, said one of the goals was to create one speed limit across the city in order to make it easier for police to enforce the law.
For all that Montreal is pushing for unity, however, several of the demerged boroughs aren’t happy with the plan. C
