Former Habs star on trial

Hockey legend Guy Lafleur was in court on Wednesday, as his lawyers argued the case against him should be thrown out. Lafleur, 57, has plead not guilty to obstruction of justice charges after it was reported he gave conflicting testimony at a bail hearing for his son Mark Lafleur.
Lafleur’s lawyers allege police, prosecutors and a judge did not act properly when they obtained an arrest warrant for the elder Lafleur last January, rather than issuing a summons.
“There was abuse from the state when they obtained the arrest warrant,” said Jean-Pierre Rancourt, one of Lafleur’s lawyers. According to Lafleur’s legal team, the arrest warrant was issued only because of Lafleur’s fame and caused unnecessary and irreparable damage to his reputation. “The only remedy is a stay of proceedings,” said Rancourt.
