Off the beaten path at POP Montreal

It's 6:00 p.m. on a Wednesday. The 24 is rolling down Sherbrooke, weaving in and out of traffic, bringing me closer to my destination, St-Laurent. I scan the bus looking for any semblance of a fellow passenger. Negative. Business types in suits holding briefcases are my only company.

10 years of dealing pot

The Marijuana Party of Canada's founder was on hand to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of medical marijuana distribution in Montreal. The past 10 years have been a bit of an uphill battle, Marc-Boris Saint-Maurice said. Medical marijuana is available to members of Montreal's Compassion Centre where the celebration, hosted by two original founders of the movement, took place last week.

The Harper government needs to respect the rights of citizens

Abousfian Abdelrazik, the Montrealer who was arrested in Sudan on terrorism charges and marooned there for several years, is embarking on a speaking tour to share his story. Sadly, stories like his are becoming the norm under Canada's current government. Since Stephen Harper took power, there have been at least five high profile cases in which the government has refused to repatriate a citizen trapped in another country.

Stingers slide in muddy match up VS Citadins

The Concordia Stingers men's soccer team lost in a close game against the UQAM Citadins with a final score of 1-0. Though this has not been a stellar season for the Stingers, it was clear from the start of the game that the undefeated UQAM team had met its match in Concordia.

Quebec, Ontario to take on Big Tobacco companies

Quebec is in line to become the fourth province to launch a lawsuit against tobacco companies in an attempt to recover health costs. Following in the footsteps of the Ontario government, Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc announced Monday the province's intention to take on cigarette manufacturers.

More and more people are affected by mental illnesses

Depression and other mental illnesses are increasing worldwide, but only 25 per cent of these affected are getting treatment. In 10 years, depression will be the second leading cause of death, according to the World Health Organization. According to Statistics Canada, nearly 30 per cent of young Quebecers are living with a lot of stress in their lives.

Ladies like lots of meaningless sex too

WATERLOO, Ont. (CUP) - Our generation of women has been brought up in the era of Ginger Spice's "Girl Power," Samantha Jones's fabulousness and Angelina Jolie's Billy-Bob-sex-in-the-limo-leather-pants-snake-tattoo days. These women have become icons in the eyes of the twenty-something girl for their ball-busting feminist attitude.

Perfect record no more

The Concordia men's rugby team had their chance of a perfect season ruined on Sunday at the hands of the McGill Redmen in a 57-10 beating. The Stingers now drop into second place ahead of Bishops and Sherbrooke. In the first 20 minutes, it seemed like the Stingers had a shot at defeating their cross-town rivals.

Students will fight CEGEP tuition fees

If the provincial Liberals act on the proposal to begin charging tuition fees at CEGEPs, they can expect student federations to put up a fight. Xavier Lefebvre Boucher, president of student lobby group Féderation étudiante collégiale du Québec said he wants Premier Jean Charest and the Minister of Education to retract the proposal.

You must Whip it!

"By day, the girls are waitresses, nurses and teachers. By night, they give the crowd what they want." So says Jimmy Fallon, as the announcer at the Austin, Texas Roller Derby, the event at the heart of Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It. Bliss (Ellen Paige) lives in small town Texas, with her pageant-centric mother, her cute as pie sister and her father who wishes he had spawned boys who play sports.

Educating the heart: The power of compassion

The Dalai Lama sat in the lotus position on a couch, slowly cleaning his yellow-tinted glasses as members of the press looked on. Thirty minutes later, Tibet's spiritual and political leader faced an audience of 15,000, sitting in the same position, as he spoke about compassion, religion and procrastination.
