The Reign – Keep it Regal

You’re back from spring break, your dignity left on the beaches of somewhere hot and the debauchery you had grown to embrace finally subsiding-that is, until next weekend. I was good and didn’t hit up the usual spring break locations, but was lucky enough to drop down to New York, and then back home to Vancouver to visit the family and remind myself how shitty the weather is in Montreal. People were in skirts and T-shirts in Vancouver; things like that just don’t happen in Montreal in February.
While we were gone, the noise around the dead prez riots continued as The Geoduck Student Union released a video of compiled footage from anonymous sources-students that don’t want to get booted from the university. If you’re lost, on Feb. 15 a riot erupted after a dead prez show at Evergreen State College in Washington. It started with police arresting a student; then other students, protesting, surrounded a police car and chanted to let the guy go. He was finally released, but the pepper spray still came out and a deputy’s car was flipped over and trashed. If you’re interested in seeing the footage, YouTube it.
The first track, from the new Roots album Rising Down leaked. The track is called “75 Bars” and gets me excited for the rest of the album. The album will focus on political issues, so you know they had to get the regular crew of conscious hip hoppers on the bill: Common, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Q tip and-although I’m not sure how he fits in here-Styles P. But they will all be featured on the album, which drops April 29.
Also set for the end of April, Lil Wayne is threatening (again) to drop The Carter III. The list of guest appearances is long and damn, I don’t blame Weezy for calling in all those favours, after he was featured on everybody’s tracks last year. Some of the artists I’m happy will be on the album are Fabolous, Jay-Z and Juelz Santana.
DJ Shadow has collaborated with LRG clothing to drop a white down jacket. The idea for the lining is cool and features DJ Shadow’s album covers, but I’m not sure how the white exterior will fare in this dirty city.
Off the Hook clothing store at 1021 Ste. Catherine will be having a huge sale from 8 – 10 p.m. on Thursday. The store carries street wear, sneakers and limited edition toys. The “We Make it Rain” sale is cash only and on the third floor, so unless you feel like hiking up and down stairs you need to hit on an ATM on your way in.
After that, you can head over to The Black History Month exhibit at Tokyo Bar on St. Laurent. In honour of Black History Month, WRG? Magazine is hosting a skateboarding-centric art show. Make sure to check out the skateboard the project revolves around, which features a crossword filled with black skateboarders that pioneered the way for other black skaters. Partying will ensue. Music by DJ Psychology.

This week on The Reign I’ll be giving away tickets to see Wyclef Jean, who will be performing Wednesday Feb. 27 at Metropolis. To enter, send your full name and phone number to [email protected], then listen in Tuesday 4 – 6 p.m. at www.cjlo.com.
