The Decemberists – Always The Bridesmaid: A Singles Series Vol 3
(2008; Jealous Brothers)

Always The Bridesmaid: A Singles Series Vol 3 is yet another fruitful release from the Portland-based Decemberists. With only two tracks, this digital release EP is characteristic of the band’s folk-tinged pop melodies led by front man Colin Meloy’s tender vocal delivery. “A Record Year For Rainfall” is a mellow and lushly orchestrated track, while “A Raincoat” is a wistful number where Meloy’s vocals and guitar seem to question whether Caroline (a possible lover, perhaps?) actually made it rain more by wearing her raincoat. Meloy’s lyrics abound with unexpected, quirky quips such as these. A mix of Gogol Bordello, REM, Neutral Milk Hotel and U2, The Decemberists write accessible, catchy pop songs, with melodies that gracefully carry Meloy’s poetic lyrics. Always The Bridesmaid departs slightly from the band’s upbeat playfulness, offering a slightly melancholy expression of their talent.

Keane – Perfect Symmetry
(2008; Island)

Keane’s new album Perfect Symmetry plays out like Brandon Flowers of the killers joining U2 minus Bono, in much the same fashion of Chris Cornell joining Rage Against the Machine; none of the expected synergy, just floweresque vocals over U2 instrumentals.
In that sense, Perfect Symmetry is nothing short of average. The opening track, “Spiralling,” begins with promise, kicking off with a hollow drum beat reminiscent of the quality of 80’s pop rock. From there Keane fails to build momentum, each song holding on to a catchy rhythm for dear life.
