F— punk

VANCOUVER (CUP) - Now, I understand the significance of the Sex Pistols, musically. They created a new sound that was edgy, abrasive and took all remaining preconceptions of what a musician or a band was, chewed them up, and vomited them back out. The only problem - in my opinion anyway - is that in the thirty years since it was birthed on the streets of London, punk has done little to grow, diversify, or actually do anything about the problems it has made a living off of pointing out to disenfranchised kids.

Bran Van 3000

They still have it in them. After a six-year hiatus, Bran Van 3000 is back with their third album Rose and they can still bring the goods. You wouldn't think BV3 went MIA with Rose taking off right where 2001's Discosis left off with a potent cocktail of pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop and soul.

Defining all that is emo

OTTAWA (CUP) -- Emo is a three-letter word that means more than most poly-syllabic contrivances. It started as a music scene, became a fashion statement and is now shorthand for everything from teen angst to Weezer. Emo is many things to many people, including the good folks of Emo, Ontario.

Manchester Orchestra:

The word "indie," short for independent, is about as easy to define as the music that classifies it. Jeremiah, the twenty-four year-old drummer from the Manchester Orchestra was able to give some insight on what being "indie" or sounding "indie" really means.

The men from Unkle (Bob)

Every now and then a band comes along by way of the underground, a surprise attack if you will. A band like Coldplay for example must have had a plan of attack before they snuck up and exploded in North America. Unkle Bob, a quintet out of Glasgow, had a plan.

Undead screamo hardcore band rocks out

Adead Motion is very much alive. The band rocked out at Festival Emergenza, the biggest festival for unsigned bands. They competed with five other bands to get to the second round. And they did. Adead Motion is Simon Trudeau (vocals), Marc-André Gagnon (guitar), Thibaut Porret (guitar), Vincent Joly (drums) and Jean-David Brisebois (bass), "a screamo hardcore" band.

Seether’s Shaun Morgan

Like a phoenix is said to rise from ash, Seether is back with their third studio album Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces leaving darkness behind them. Seether is Shaun Morgan (lead vocals, guitar), Dale Stewart (bass) and John Humphrey (drums), but it's Morgan who has taken a bullet and experienced turbulent times in the recent past.

Perry Farrell still reigning

Perry Farrell is justifably one of the godfathers of alternative rock. Farrell rose to fame in the mid-80s as frontman of Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros. He is also one of the founders of Lollapalooza. Over twenty years later Farrell formed another band, Satellite Party, and still has a relevant reigning position in today's music scene.
